As I awoke this morning, a sense of deja vu washed over me. A mob, reminiscent of a scene from a dystopian novel, was storming through a legislative chamber, defiling institutional symbols and causing the police to flee in disarray. Tear gas lingered in the air as hooligans, bizarrely waving US flags, scaled the walls and occupied offices. In a surreal twist, the US president was not condemning them but instead encouraging them.
Was it a glitch in time? Or perhaps a lesson in karma? But then, a crucial distinction emerged. In the storming of Hong Kong's parliament, no lives were lost despite the chaos. The police didn't resort to lethal force, and the building was not filled with tear gas.
It's genuinely astounding how swiftly perceptions can shift. What was once hailed as a 'beautiful sight' is now condemned as an 'insurrection '. Who could have predicted this turn of events?
In 2019, Nancy Pelosi salivated with pleasure at scenes of mayhem in Hong Kong. I know it's a cheap shot to gloat, given that the two scenarios are slightly different, so I've restrained myself. Nancy P, you common-kissing flap-dragon and a hypocrite of the highest order! The tartness of your face sours ripe grapes. There, I feel much better.
By blatant interference in Hong Kong's political development, with the 'you too can be like us' mantra, a phrase often used by Western powers to promote their form of democracy, you invited an unwelcome and avoidable outcome. It's cognitive narcissism that only your model of democracy works and the route for getting there. Yesterday in Washington, your sanctimonious words echoed forlornly and tarnished while blood spilt on Capital Hill.
And yes, Trump is a law unto himself. He is a bully, a buffoon, and a whiner, inhabiting a self-made world in which he is the sole judge. He has no appetite for argument and seeks only to browbeat those he regards as his inferiors, namely everyone. Nonetheless, he secured over 70 million votes in a close-run election. From this, I can only deduce that the US is deeply polarised.
What happens over the next two weeks is anyone's guess, but I'm confident Trump isn't going away. After a tantrum or two, he may leave the White House and settle into his new role of disruptor general. Think Colonel Kurtz operating with his private army, up the river, alone, with a heart of darkness.
